Integrating Air Quality and Transportation Planning

The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), and NARC have maintained a cooperative agreement over the last fifteen years on integrating air quality and transportation planning. For the last four years, NARC, U.S. EPA and U.S. DOT have conducted a series of ten workshops to address the most pressing challenges in attempting to balance healthy air quality with transportation investments. These workshops are designed primarily for policy officials, executive directors, and air quality and transportation staff from Regional Councils and Metropolitan Planning Organizations. The workshop's primary purpose is to benefit both metropolitan and rural areas that are required to meet federal air quality standards. Topics have included 8-hour-ozone and PM 2.5 standards, public health, early action compacts, traffic demand management, and others.
